Our new equipment arrives...

Recently we invested in some new equipment and expanded part of our factory.

I thought that you might like to see a short photographic essay by Chris Hellyar our IT manager.  You will find his comments at the bottom of each photo as you move through them.

We will do another one after they have been commissioned and the new walls and ventilation has been installed.

Hi David,

I understand they did. Unfortunately I was out of the country when the equipment was installed. The photo essay is somewhat 'censored' from the original and was really quite funny but not suitable for publishing.

It is still going through the commissioning process and it will be another month before it is use. It is quite amazing the processes that we have to go through to ensure compliance with all regulations before we can bring them into production.

We will do another photo essay when they are in action.

Hi Warren,

What are those for? What do they do? Just curious.

Hi Mike,

There were four new pieces of equipment.

One, the Sejong machine is for enteric coating out tablets. We already have an enteric coating machine but this new one is a fully enclosed system which much more capacity and more efficient.

The blending machine is also a larger version of what we have. It is a 3D machine which gives a very efficient blend. Our current machine holds 200 liters whereas the new one holds 400 liters.

One of the other machines is for our skin care products and enables us to do the emulsification under a vacumn. We will also be able to program the mixing protocol by computer and reduce the risk of operator error.

The other machine is a higher speed filling machine and will enable us to do a wider variety of tube sizes.

When they are all up and running we will do a full tour of the factory showing how we make all our products.

Can't wait for the full tour!

Hi Richard,

I am always a bit hesitant to say to much about new products in the pipeline because invariably they take longer to develop than we expect.

We are working on a new generation of Total Balance, a new version of Omega 3 using our existing product but adding an additional natural substance to make it even more effective, plus further skin care products.

Hi Warren,
I was reading the following article on soy isoflavones today, www.westonaprice.org/soy/isoflavones.html, and decided to ask you about the soy isoflavones in TB M and W. I mentioned it last July but you may have missed my entry in the blog. Why don't you remove the soy isoflavones from all versions of TB, or maybe release one without them for people who are concerned about the dangers of these substances? I know I could use the TB unisex but I would miss out on other good ingredients like Nattokinase. My husband and I really like your supplements but every time I take TB I keep thinking about my thyroid and other problems referred to in the article above and many others in the Internet.

I know that you are not concerned about soy isoflavones and believe they are good but, considering the negative things, wouldn't it be better to have them replaced for something else?

Thanks,
Vera.

Hi Vera,

Thanks for raising this issue again. Isoflavones were very carefully researched before deciding to include them in the men's and women's TB. We were aware that there were differing opinions about the desirability or not of isoflavones.

In that regard there are many nutrients in which there is no consensus. For example, everyone agrees that Vitamin C is good for you at modest levels but there is no agreement on what that level should be.

In NZ the recommended level for a male is 45mgs, in Thailand and many other countries it is 60mgs. We believe it should not be in excess of 400mgs whereas others believe it should be at least 1,000mgs.

It is often not the nutrient itself what is potentially harmful but the size of the dose.

The research that we did looked at the average intake of the components of isoflavones from all dietary sources. What this showed was that the western diet was substantially deficient and only a fraction of that of the Asian diet.

We have taken a very conservative position in this by only using 50mgs for the total daily dose in Total Balance. The ingredient we are using is 40% so the actual isoflavone content is only 20mgs a day. When you compare that with 60 grams (60,000mgs) a day referred to in part of the article you referred to then you can see that there is really no relationship.

The body of evidence does support that the body does need some isoflavones and they are beneficial. But...of course that is presupposing they are not ingested in excess. At this stage there is very little food that has isoflavones added in western diets so the risk of over consuming is very low indeed.

On balance I believe that we are doing the right thing by including it in the adult versions of TB but giving the option of the Unisex version without it.

I appreciate that the Unisex version does not have Nattokinase. This is because Nattokinase is not really suitable for younger people and we have a lot of younger people use our Unisex Premium.

Unfortunately it is not practical for us to do additional versions of TB Premium to offer it with or without the isoflavones. Maybe it might be possible some time in the future. In the meantime we will continue to keep an eye on latest research on this subject and should there be the slightess doubt we would act immediately. But, in the meantime just keep in mind that the dose is very, very low although it is enough to provide some upside but with no downsides.

Hope this helps.
