Oprah and Acai in the news...
Nothing new about Oprah being in the news, and lately Acai berry has also been in the news due to the hype and claims associated with it by marketers of this product. Acai is a good product provided it is the genuine thing with the right specifications, but it is not a miracle product as some people claim. There are many herbals that are as good or better. It is just that Acai has recently been promoted so heavily.
Anyway, Oprah and Dr Oz are suing around 40 internet marketers of Acai for inferring that Oprah and Dr Oz are somehow connected with their product...which they are not. Good on them. These type of operators need to be exposed. They are not part of the industry, they have no investment in the industry. Most of them just buy the product from a contract manufacturer and really have no idea whats in it.
They can operate from home or anywhere, make outlandish claims, make their money quickly and move on. They don't even need to know anything about the product they are selling.
Below is an article about this from Nutraingredients.
Oprah sues supplement firms for false endorsement claims
By Lorraine Heller, 24-Aug-2009
Fraudulent dietary supplement marketing is again in the spotlight, after Oprah Winfrey and Dr Mehmet Oz filed a lawsuit against firms that had claimed the celebrities recommended their products.
Filed last week, the trademark infringement complaint targeted 40 internet marketers of supplement products.
According to complaint, the companies are "fabricating quotes or falsely purporting to speak in Dr Oz's and/or Ms Winfrey's voice about specific brands and products that neither of them has endorsed."
Oprah: Setting the record straight
The suit, filed by Harpo Inc, producers of The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Dr Oz Show, targeted manufacturers of acai berry products among others.
“Consumers should be aware that neither Oprah Winfrey nor Dr Oz are associated with nor do they endorse any acai berry product, company or online solicitation of such products, including MonaVie juice products,” read a statement on Winfrey’s website.
Harpo attorneys are also pursuing marketers of resveratrol products, it said.

Consumer complaints
Harpo also collaborated with Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on an investigation of consumer complaints - many forwarded to Madigan's office by Harpo - that alleged deceptive practices of the companies.
“The acai berry supplement sales programs are among the most aggressive that we have seen using misleading sales tactics to scam consumers,” said Madigan.
“Consumers should always be skeptical and educate themselves instead of blindly believing any endorsement claims. Also, consumers need to be very wary of weight loss and health claims that sound too good to be true.”
Acai fraud
Madigan filed three parallel consumer fraud lawsuits last week against suppliers and marketers of acai berry products.
Filed in the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, the suits target firms including Advanced Wellness Research, Netalab, Crush, TMP Nevada. Charges include luring customers with free trial offers, charging customers’ credit cards prematurely, not always supplying the product, and making it “nearly impossible” to cancel.
The suits request a permanent injunction barring the firms from selling dietary supplements or continuing with misleading marketing schemes. They also request restitution payments for consumers who have lost money and civil penalties of $50,000 for violating the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
“We must hold these Internet scammers accountable for their role in a seedy marketing game that steers unsuspecting consumers to online schemes. We also need to send a clear message to other marketers and networks in the business of designing misleading, traffic enticing schemes,” said Madigan.

This is a bit off-topic, but what is your opinion on Longevinex Advantage and how does it compare to Total Balance Unisex Premium? From what I understand, this is a less complete product than Total Balance Premium but it contains much more Resveratol stabilized by microencapsulation in an oxygen free environment (some claim that all other Resveratol supplements are biologically inert due to oxidation.)
Also, would you please post the fish-oil studies for Xtend-Life you referenced earlier? It's impossible to examine their validity without reading them and seeing if they are accepted in neutral peer-reviewed publications.
Thanks,
Alex

No, acai is not the best anti-oxidant out there. There are many more potent ones. For example, astaxanthin which we use in our Total Balance is more potent than acai. Nonetheless acai is a good ingredient but no better than many other herbal extracts. It has just been hyped up to make it seem better.
Cellfood has been around for a long time and is another example of hype. It is very cheap to produce. They do not reveal how much of the active ingredients they use but I suspect it is very small. Nor do they reveal what they are.
Being in a liquid there are real limitations on the ingredients they can use. A lot of important ingredients are oil based and can not be put in water unless there are emulsifiers present. Also, enzymes do not survive very long in liquids.
Longevinex is a good product but extremely expensive for what it is. I don't put a lot of store by the fact that it contains hyaluronan as the amount is to insignificant to be of real benefit as the body contains high levels of this substance and small amounts in ingested will not have much impact.
They put their product in a capsule called a LiCap which prevents oxygen from getting into the capsule. This is good because resveratrol is very sensitive to air. Another solution is to enteric coat a tablet which we do and has the same effect. Either way is good.
We can't really compare it to Total Balance as resveratrol is only one of the 85 ingredients present in TB. Is is well established that most ingredients will work more effectively combined with others rather than on their own. Resveratrol is an excellent ingredient but is only one of many other excellent ones. They all play a part in the quest for exceptional health.
Not sure what studies you are referring to regarding the fish oil. Can you prompt me on that and I will comment. Thanks
Can't really comment on that study unless a good deal of time was spent examining it. For example, what type of reservatrol did they use, natural or synthetic, what was the dose rates, etc, etc...
Remember sometimes to much of a good thing can have the opposite of the desired effect.

Ah..that makes sense. This was a private study that we had undertaken to check out our theories concerning our blend. It will not be released for general publication as some parts of it are commercially sensitive. However, if you would like to write to me personally I would be happy to release the bulk of the report to you.
Thanks for the reply on Acai berry and cellfood. I was was just reading up on some info on another antioxidant - RESVERATROL. There is a product called Ultra Renew made from a company called Pharmafoods, that uses high quantities of Resveratrol. It is apparently the latest buzz in anti-ageing and wellness in the US and has hollywood stars including oprah raving about it. Could you give me your feedback on both the product and the ingredient Resveratrol. Is it used in any of your products?
Resveratrol is an excellent ingredient. We have been using it in Total Balance and some of our other formulas for the last 7 years.
However, there are many forms of resveratrol. Some are natural, some are synthetic, some are very low potency and have some undesirable other ingredients.
I can't comment on the product you referred to as they do not reveal either the amount or potency of the resveratrol they use. It seems very expensive though. I am very skeptical about companies that are not prepared to reveal the contents of their products.
Have a look at the ingredients on our Total Balance and you will see how important it is that they are listed in detail.
I don't think that you should be concerned. Some of the acai berry does not meet specification but is unlikely to be unsafe. With regard to the colon cleanse you have to be more careful as some of them use some pretty strange herbs and may cause a reaction. I would be very wary about using a herbal colon cleanse until you were getting it from a company or herbalist that you really trusted.
Even thought they are quite popular we have never produced a colon cleanse product as we have reservations about their safety and effectiveness.
If your Doctor looks 15 years younger it would not be due to having HGH injections. It really is not what is is claimed to be and can potentially accelerate your aging if you stop.
There are many products claiming to be HGH precursors...generally amino acids but they are only dealing with part of the body's needs. There is only one way to slow down the aging process and that is use a supplement that addresses the needs of all the organs. Have a look at our Total Balance and read the sections of glycation, free radicals etc and you will get a better appreciation of what I am referring to.
Remember also that supplements are only part of the equation. You must also combine these with good lifestyle habit, diet and exercise.
